Fate? Meant to Be?

If things are ever meant to be, if there’s ever destiny in the world, why do we ever attempt anything at all? For example, when we like someone, and we talk to them… if it is meant to be some serendipity act of fate would bring two people together, no one would pursue anyone right? I’m getting this idea from 500 Days of Summer.
